DIY or Call a Pro?
The Honest Guideπ οΈ
What you can actually fix yourself, what needs a pro,
and what's literally illegal to DIY.
You Can Totally DIY Theseπͺ
No special license needed. YouTube tutorial optional but recommended.
Hanging pictures and shelves
Easy
Tools: Drill, level, wall anchors
Pro tip: Use a stud finder for heavy items. No stud? Proper wall anchors are your friend.
Fixing squeaky doors
Easy
Tools: WD-40 or hinge lubricant
Pro tip: Remove the hinge pin, clean it, apply lubricant, and pop it back. 5-minute job.
Replacing tap washers
Easy
Tools: Adjustable wrench, new washer
Pro tip: Turn off water first! Take the old washer to Bunnings to match the size.
Patching small holes in walls
Easy
Tools: Spackle, putty knife, sandpaper
Pro tip: For holes bigger than a 20c coin, use a patch kit. Sand smooth before painting.
Replacing door handles
Easy
Tools: Screwdriver only
Pro tip: Most door handles are universal. Take a photo of the old setup before removing.
Unclogging drains
Easy
Tools: Plunger, drain snake
Pro tip: Try boiling water + bicarb + vinegar before going chemical. Often works a treat.
Do NOT DIY Theseβ
Seriously. It's either illegal, dangerous, or both. Not worth the "but I saved $200" story.
Electrical work (any)
It's literally illegal to DIY in Australia. Plus, you know, electrocution.
β οΈ Consequences: Insurance won't cover damage, fines up to $40k, and potential death.
Plumbing (beyond basic)
Licensed plumbers are required for work that affects water mains or sewerage.
β οΈ Consequences: Water damage, compliance issues, and very expensive repairs.
Gas fitting
Gas leaks kill people. This is not a DIY situation.
β οΈ Consequences: Explosions, poisoning, massive fines, and voided insurance.
Structural changes
Load-bearing walls need engineering assessment. Get this wrong and your ceiling joins your floor.
β οΈ Consequences: Structural failure, building code violations, massive remediation costs.
Roof work
Falls from height are the #1 cause of workplace deaths in Australia.
β οΈ Consequences: Serious injury or death. Also, you'll probably stuff up the waterproofing.
Asbestos removal
Asbestos fibres cause mesothelioma. You need licensed removalists and disposal.
β οΈ Consequences: Cancer risk for you and your family. Not worth the savings.
